Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns are designers, entrepreneurs and the founders of not only one, but five projects and companies: the project and book “workisnotajob“, the printing factory “Lemon Books“, the DIY kit “supercraft,” the blog and interview series “super work” and the home craft platform “hello handmade“. The projects have one message in common: Work is more than just a job, use your talent and make something out of it.

In the interview Sophie and Catharina explain why their secret to success isn´t a secret and why they would only need just one wish fullfilled by a fairy godmother.

Behind every good business idea is a well thought concept. Sometimes, however, it is also only a fortunate coincidence that leads to success. How about you, Catharina and Sophie: How did your projects and companies emerge – with targeted planning or some coincidences?

Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns: We are consistently pursuing where our hearts lead us. We are not big fans of business plans or spending time with theoretical planning. Our business model is creativity, which includes the people behind the business. In fact, all of our projects have a higher meaning: We want to inspire others to be designers. This is in everything we do and it is our living and working philosophy. Work is more than a job, more than getting paid and one who goes through life creatively, is less dependent on others. That is why we celebrate a generation of DIY makers. This is no coincidence, but a cause that is close to our hearts.

    The philosophy of “workisnotajob”.

Everything you tackle seems to be succeeding. What is the secret of your success?

Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns: No secret, we just love to realize our own ideas. We treat everyone how we ourselves would like to be treated as a customer and this creates the best business models. What kind of product would I wish for? What would I like to spend my money on ? We have a very idealistic attitude to work. We try to economize and create offers that inspire and provide ways in which you can be self-igniting – time and positive inspiration is priceless. When you live honestly in what you believe and create value, people feel that and often reward it.

Are there or were there defeats in your life? How do you deal with it?

Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns: Of course! Setbacks and defeats are parts of an intense life. No one who has the courage to reach out to new ventures is simply marching through and lives carefree and happy from now on. That’s not what this is about. “Happy” is not the goal, but the substance. Consistently working for something you love is never easy, convenient or safe. To learn to deal with it has a positive effect on the personality. You need to seize every situation as an opportunity and you shouldn´t let your fears or a setback stop you reaching your goal. No matter what happens you have to make something out of it.

A fairy godmother grant you three wishes – what would they be?

Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns: Good health, good health and more good health. The other wishes we can accomplish ourselves.

Thank you for the interview, Sophie and Catharina!
