I know, I know, normally my interviews are with entrepeneurs who have just launched their business. But as I had the chance to ask Peter Laursen, Managing Director at “Ib Laursen“, one of my favourite interior labels, a few questions, I couldn´t resist. Plus, you´ll get a sneak peek at the brand new Ib Laursen collection that hit the stores today. Enjoy!
Behind every good business idea is a well thought concept. Sometimes, however, it is only a coincidence that leads to success. How about you, Peter? How did „Ib Laursen“ emerge and how did you and your father succeed in business?
Peter Laursen: “I believe basically that our reason for success is hard work. Starting with my parents who founded the company and from the very beginning they put in many many hours in making it a success. That also created a very sound economical foundation which allowed us to expand when needed without having to ask the bank first but we could go on as needed.
Also having the right staff has been very important. It is not possible to grow every year without having committed and dedicated people working for you.”
What is special about „Ib Laursen“, what makes your company and your products unique?
Peter Laursen: “We take every customer serious and treat them professionally. We mainly, almost 100%, only cater to the small and medium sized individual shop. And our whole business setup is arranged to deliver to this type of customer. Not many other companies do that and are able to give the customers the same service and also variety in terms of products.
About our products, I think they are unique in the way that the fit very well to each other. We spend many resources on making sure that almost all items can be matched with each other. This means that if you for example buy a new Mynte color, it can be matched with colors from last year or the year before.
Further, we try to stay loyal to our own style. We are based in Denmark and from here we get our inspiration, that is something we have to keep focus on and stay loyal to.”
What advice would you give founders who want to launch a business?
Peter Laursen: “As mentioned above, nothing is more important than hard work and stay modest in your spending in the early years. That will soon allow you an economic freedom to expand your business.”
What is important to you, what is it that really matters?
Peter Laursen: “Family, and having the time to be with them. I just had twins 6 weeks ago, now having three daughters, so that is now more important than ever.”
Thank you very much for the interview, Peter!
